    A decision-theoretic approach to reliable message delivery

    We argue that the tools of decision theory need to be taken more seriously in the specification and analysis of systems.     Great Expectations. Part I: On the Customizability of Generalized Expected Utility

    We propose a generalization of expected utility that we call generalized EU (GEU), where a decision maker's beliefs are represented by plausibility measures, and the decision maker's tastes are represented by general (i.e.,not necessarily real-valued) utility functions. We show that every agent, ``rational'' or not, can be modeled as a GEU maximizer. We then show that we can customize GEU by selectively imposing just the constraints we want.     Many different rules for decision making have been introduced in the literature. We present a single framework in which to study and compare these rules. This is done by defining expected utility with respect to general expectation structures, where a decision maker's beliefs are represented by plausibility measures and the decision maker's tastes are represented by general (i.e., not necessarily real-valued) utility functions. We call the resulting notion of expected utility generalized EU (GEU) and show that we can represent arbitrary preference relations on acts using GEU. We then show that each of Savage's postulates corresponds to an axiom on GEU. Thus, GEU can be customized to capture postulates of interest.

    Efficient search approaches for K-medoids-based algorithms

    In this paper, the concept of previous medoid index is introduced. The utilization of memory for efficient medoid search is also presented. We propose a hybrid search approach for the problem of nearest neighbor search. The hybrid search approach combines the previous medoid index, the utilization of memory, the criterion of triangular inequality elimination and the partial distance search. The proposed hybrid search approach is applied to the k-medoids-based algorithms. Experimental results based on Gauss-Markov source, curve data set and elliptic clusters demonstrate that the proposed algorithm applied to the CLARANS algorithm may reduce the number of distance calculations from 88.4% to 95.2% with the same average distance per object compared with CLARANS. The proposed hybrid search approach can also be applied to nearest neighbor searching and the other clustering algorithms

    Rocaglates induce gain-of-function alterations to eIF4A and eIF4F

    Rocaglates are a diverse family of biologically active molecules that have gained tremendous interest in recent years due to their promising activities in pre-clinicalĀ cancer studies. As a result, this family of compoundsĀ has been significantly expanded through the development of efficient synthetic schemes. However, it is unknown whether all of the members of the rocaglate family act through similar mechanisms of action. Here, we present a comprehensive study comparing the biological activities of >200 rocaglates to better understand how the presence of different chemical entities influences their biological activities. Through this, we find that most rocaglates preferentially repress the translation of mRNAs containing purine-rich 5' leaders, but certain rocaglates lack this bias in translation repression.     Developing a Pipeline of African Global Surgery Scholars

    Global surgery is developing as new discipline in many countries. Global surgery primarily aims to improve access to quality surgery in low-and-middle Income countries (LMICs). Thus, ensuring appropriate LMIC representation and leadership in global surgery research, projects, and innovations, is essential. There is a paucity of pathways for students and young clinicians in LMICs to attain training in and exposure to global surgery research and projects. If equity in global surgery leadership and scholarship is truly desired, steps need to be taken to ensure that more students and young clinicians in LMICs are exposed to global surgery as an academic discipline and are offered pathways to practice and leadership. This paper explores ways of ensuring this through increased exposure, increased training and increased funding
